Despite a costly defeat in the Danish capital, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was happy with how his players conducted themselves. However the officials on the night will not be on the Dutchman’s Christmas card list this year.

The man from the Netherlands praised the Red Devil’s contribution to the opening of match. He said “we scored two great goals” and claimed that his team “dictated” the game in parts.

The former Ajax man claimed that the team should “take that with them” but were bitterly disappointed to lose the game in the way they did.

Ten Hag asserted that even with 10 men, his team were largely in control. This point of view could be backed up by the fact the Red Devils had 48% possession and the same number of shots on target as the hosts despite playing well over half the game with 10 men.

The Dutchman’s view on the officiating in the game struck a contrasting picture. The coach was asked how he reflected on the game and he retorted if the interviewer had an hour. A rare bit of humour from the often serious character.

The manager bemoaned the referee’s role in the defeat. He claimed that not only tonight, but all season the decisions have been going against the Old Trafford side.

Once again he may have a point. VAR has been a thorny issue for many Man United supporters this season. The team have also made the wrong sort of history becoming the first team in competition history to concede four penalties in their first four group games.

The man from Haaksbergen claimed that “the red card changes everything and we concede two goals before half-time that should never have come. The first is offside, the second is a penalty… very debatable.”

It is safe to say who the Manchester United manager saw as the main culprit for the devastating loss in Copenhagen.

Ten Hag also took exception to how long the red card took to be given and claimed that the freezing of the image made the foul by Marcus Rashford look worse. To be fair, this has been a sentiment echoed by plenty of those involved in football.

The Red Devils coach also boldly asserted that the attitude of the team was great and “as a team, I can’t make any criticism.” The man in the Old Trafford hotseat also defiantly claimed “It will turn. It will turn. There will be one moment in our season…”.

While Ten Hag can take heart in the first half performance before the red card and the fight shown in the second half, it is clear that the attitude was not great. His side repeatedly display mental fragility in key moments and it has put a huge dent in their European hopes. If the Old Trafford outfit are to salvage anything from this season, they need to buck up their ideas quickly. The unforgiving atmosphere of Galatasaray’s RAMS park awaits.

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has indicated that his side lost against FC Copenhagen primarily due to Marcus Rashford’s red card.

United were cruising and comfortably in the lead with a two-goal advantage courtesy of a brace from Hojlund.

However, Rashford received what seemed like a dubious red card and was instantly sent off. The controversial decision left United a man down.

Copenhagen scored two goals just before the break to restore parity.

United took the lead again through Bruno Fernandes who scored from the penalty spot. However, once more, Jacob Neestrup’s men levelled before Roony Bardghji came up with the match-winning goal in the 87th minute.

At the moment, the Red Devils sit bottom of Group A with just three points.

United are facing an uphill battle to advance to the next round of the Champions League and will undoubtedly need big performances against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich to do so.

After the final whistle, Hojlund spoke to TNT Sports (via Manchester Evening News) and gave his verdict on the match at Parken.

The young goalscorer said, “I think we started very well, to be honest. We controlled the game until the red card and that changed the match, of course.”

“If you don’t have a look at the result, if you only take the [opening] 20 minutes into account, I think we did quite well. I think we switched off a little bit [after the red card].”

“We were playing a game with one man down, so of course, it’s giving them belief and I know how the crowd can help the team here. It gave them a big boost. We did quite good at the beginning of the second half, we were composed on the ball and we kept switching the game a lot, got the penalty and got in front again.”

The 20-year-old added, “So it’s unfortunate we’re here, with zero points from the game again.”

Manchester United were stunned by FC Copenhagen in a 4-3 loss on Wednesday night.

This loss sees Man United slump to last place in their Champions League group, reducing their chance of progressing to the round of 16 with just two group matches left to play.

While conceding four goals is not something he would want to get accustomed to, goalkeeper Andre Onana continued to show signs of improvement with a confident and resolute performance.

During the opening 42 minutes, United played some impressive football, scoring two goals and constantly bombarding Copenhagen’s penalty area.

Although Copenhagen launched some sporadic counter-attacks, Onana proved solid, saving a close-range strike by Rasmus Falk and racing off his line to claim a threatening cross from Mohammed Elyounoussi.

United’s game was fundamentally changed for the worse when Marcus Rashford was sent off three minutes before half-time.

At first, United looked confident even with 10 men, however, the cracks in their defence soon started to emerge.

Onana did well to race out toward the halfway line and clear a threatening cross to Elyounoussi, showing the legwork and confidence outside of the box that made him such an appealing transfer this past summer.

Still, Copenhagen would soon find the back of the net, capitalising on their man advantage.

On the stroke of half time, Copenhagen received a penalty that the United shot-stopper could do little about, with the home team levelling the score going into the break.

In the second half, Onana saved a surprise shot from distance by Denis Vavro moments before blocking a glancing header.

Unfortunately, it would be his defenders that would let him down, with Diogo Dalot switching off to allow Copenhagen through to score a third while substitute Roony Bardghji pounced on a loose ball to score the home side’s winner.

Throughout the match, Onana made four saves in total along with a punch and one high claim.

The Cameroonian continued to show strong legwork, completing 40 of his 48 attempted passes for an 83% passing accuracy.

Onana’s long balls also proved effective, with the 27 year old completing 11 of 19 attempts.

Notably, the goalkeeper got 60 touches on the ball, impressively outnumbering the majority of the outfielder players on both teams.

While it may have been a scoreline to forget, Onana showed further signs of improvement as he continues to ease into his role as United’s first-choice keeper.

Should his performances remain consistent, Onana should prove to be the goalkeeper that United requires.

Still, a lot depends on his defenders, who continued to show signs of vulnerability once things weren’t going United’s way.

VAR, once again, has conspired against Manchester United and left their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread.

TNT Sports pundit and former United midfielder, Owen Hargreaves, has claimed that “VAR is getting a bit out of control.” Hargreaves went on to mention that all the decisions being made on screens is not what we love about the game.

The former English international was of course referring to the decision to send Marcus Rashford off just before half-time.

The decision itself would prove to be absolutely catastrophic for the Red Devils. United had jumped into a 2-0 lead thanks to two goals by Rasmus Hojlund and seemed to be taking a significant step to second place in the group.

However, the decision to send off Rashford after a VAR check resulted in a United collapse and despite a brave fight in the second half with 10 men, the team from Old Trafford could not hold on for a valiant point.

Fellow TNT Sports pundit, Paul Scholes echoed Hargreaves’ perspective on the sending off.

They both agreed that it was never a penalty in “a million years”. The Champions League winners both questioned the referee’s understanding of the game as a consequence of the red card decision.

Scholes in particular was sympathetic to Ten Hag and United’s plight. The former midfield maestro stated that while 9 defeats in 17 is not good enough, the team did show a “little bit of fight” on the night.

The pundit went on to claim that the team was probably lacking the leadership skills of a Casemiro and this fact most certainly contributed to their nightmare in Denmark. The former player bemoaned the team’s inability to concentrate in defensive situations.

The side’s poor mentality when their backs are against the wall has been a constant theme of this disappointing season for the side from Manchester.

Scholes did assert though that the solution is not to sack the under-fire Dutch manager, claiming they cannot keep repeating the same cycle of sacking the coach every 2 or 3 years. He also asserted the Red Devils “can’t afford” to fire him.

It is unclear if the former England man was referring to the club’s finances or whether it was a show of support for Ten Hag. What is clear is that both the coach and the players have a heck of a job on their hands to salvage their European adventure. On to Turkey then.

Rasmus Højlund continued his fine Champions League form with two more goals as Manchester United once again failed to capitalise on their striker’s good work against FC Copenhagen.

Erik ten Hag’s side squandered a two goal lead to end up losing 4-3 in the final few minutes of a game once again overshadowed by VAR.

United went two-nil up courtesy of two classic poacher goals by Højlund, who takes his Champions League goal record for the club to five goals in four games.

While the Danish striker has struggled for goals domestically, he has consistently run riot on the continent. And tonight was no different.

Inspired by a return to his former side, Højlund was a constant menace for the Copenhagen defenders in the first half. Two goals doesn’t quite capture how much of a threat he was with a powerful volley almost clinching a well-deserved hat-trick.

The cruel hand of inept officiating then intervened to ruin what had been a textbook start by Ten Hag’s men.

Marcus Rashford was sent off for a coming together which created a bad contact with a Copenhagen player, but was completely unintentional.

The referee chose initially to not give a red, but was instructed by the VAR team to reconsider. This then led to the inexplicable act of reversing his decision.

(When even Jamie Carragher is in United’s corner, you know it was a bad decision)

United were reduced to ten men and the entire complexion of the game changed. A more in-depth recap of exactly how this farcical game then unfolded can be found here.

Højlund did not allow his head to drop in the face of adversity, however. The dynamic Dane worked relentlessly for his team, constantly harassing the opposition defence and offering an outlet for his team to progress up the pitch.

United’s positive performance, despite the numerical disadvantage, turned sour when Højlund was substituted. His teammates sorely lacked his potent pairing of physicality and pace up front, and Copenhagen were able to really take a footing in the game as a result.

The result, with Højlund’s performance and goals, mirrored the previous Champions League fixture against Galatasaray. Two goals by the striker were forgotten amidst a cacophony of mistakes by his teammates (and officials), concluding with a disappointing United loss.

Højlund, once again, deserved far more on a night where he looked worth every penny of the £72 million United paid for him in the summer.

Manchester United suffered a devastating 4-3 defeat at the hands of FC Copenhagen in their fourth clash of Group A in the Champions League.

A Rasmus Hojlund brace and a converted penalty from Bruno Fernandes were not enough to sink Copenhagen at Parken.

United managed 48% possession to the opposition’s 52% share of the ball.

Erik ten Hag’s men had a total of 9 shots, with eight of these being on target. In comparison, Copenhagen amassed 16 shots with half of these requiring Andre Onana to swing into action.

United put together 497 passes with a success rate of 84%.

Copenhagen strung 517 passes with a pass accuracy of 88%.

One of the Red Devils’ better performers during a disappointing night at Parken was Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Englishman made three important clearances during the time he was on the pitch.

Wan-Bissaka also registered four interceptions and came up with three tackles. He was not dribbled past even on one occasion.

The 25-year-old delved into seven ground duels and came out on top an impressive five times. Wan-Bissaka was required to contest two challenges in the air. He won one of these aerial duels.

The right-back lost possession of the ball 12 times and was fouled once. He had 83 touches of the ball to his name.

Wan-Bissaka successfully delivered 50 of the 56 passes he attempted, managing a personal pass accuracy of 89% to his name.

The defender made one key pass. He did not find his teammates with any of his crosses or long balls – an aspect of the game he will undoubtedly be keen to improve.

Wan-Bissaka embarked on one dribble which he completed.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

As a result of their defeat, United now have an uphill battle to make it out of the group ahead of crucial clashes vs. Galatasaray and Bayern Munich.

Manchester United were defeated 4-3 by FC Copenhagen on Wednesday night in what was a box office match of football.

With a little less than three minutes on the clock, Man United launched a fiery counter-attack, with Scott McTominay slotting the ball through to Rasmus Hojlund who thumped the ball into the back of the net.

Although the home side tried to apply pressure after the restart, United comfortably retrieved possession and continued to dictate the flow of play in the minutes that followed.

10 minutes in, Alejandro Garnacho showed his flair as he dribbled around a Copenhagen defender to cut into the box.

Unfortunately, his pass to the edge of the box breezed past his teammates, bringing an end to a lucrative opportunity to extend United’s lead.

Less than five minutes later, Jonny Evans halted his run and dropped to the ground as he appeared to incur a muscular strain.

Unable to continue the match, he was replaced by Raphael Varane.

While the match was delayed for a time due to a medical emergency in the crowd, the break did little to distract United from the task at hand.

Almost immediately after the restart, Fernandes launched a rapid counter-attack, laying off the ball to Garnacho whose shot was saved by Copenhagen keeper Kamil Grabara.

There to collect the rebound was Hojlund, who scored his and United’s second goal of the match.

Moments later, the Dane showed his desire to secure his hat-trick, capitalising on a defensive error to hit a half-volley that was barely saved.

Off the ensuing corner kick, Harry Maguire connected well with the ball to send a well-struck header goalwards, however, his shot was saved as well.

32 minutes in, Aaron Wan-Bissaka appeared to be back at his best following his injury recovery, performing a sublime sliding tackle on Elias Achouri to extinguish a rare Copenhagen attack.

The right-back also continued to show strength on the attack, providing Rashford with support on the right wing and proving to be a constant nuisance to the Copenhagen defence.

Six minutes before the break, Hojlund broke through the defence and found himself up against just one defender and the keeper.

He attempted to sneak the ball past the keeper at the far post, missing by inches.

Moments later, the referee made his way to the touchline to review a potential red card off-camera.

While shielding the ball, Marcus Rashford was found to have stamped on the ankle of Elias Jelert, with the Copenhagen left-back’s ankle bending in an unnatural way.

A red card was brandished to Rashford, making life a little more complicated for an otherwise impressive United.

On the 44-minute mark, Copenhagen made the most of their man advantage, with Mohamed Elyounoussi scoring off a blistering counter-attack.

Still, with 13 minutes of added time, United would need to be at their best to protect their lead going into the break.

Two minutes into stoppage time, United showed no interest in remaining on the back foot as Bruno Fernandes’ pass narrowly missed the feet of Hojlund, who was perfectly positioned to secure his hat-trick.

While Elyounoussi was positioned to get on the end of an opportunistic cross and beat the offside trap, Andre Onana proved exactly how good he is with his feet outside the box, running upfield and clearing the ball out of danger.

Six minutes into stoppage time, poor luck struck again for United, with Harry Maguire’s arm brushing up against the ball to hand Copenhagen a penalty.

Diogo Gonçalves sent Onana diving the wrong way, putting Copenhagen level with United as the home crowd erupted.

Once the half-time whistle sounded, United would have no doubt been frustrated with the way the match unfolded following their impressive start to the match.

Erik ten Hag would clearly need to make some significant strategic adjustments at the break in order to cope with the one-man deficit.

Sofyan Amrabat came on for Christian Eriksen at the start of the second half to inject some extra energy into United’s midfield.

During the opening stages of the second half, United looked relatively unfazed by being a man down, controlling possession and dominating the midfield with a slow build-up play.

Six minutes in, Copenhagen looked to make the most of the little possession they had when Denis Vavro fired a long-range effort on goal which Onana was able to comfortably save.

Moments later, the Cameroonian shot-stopper was called into action yet again to save a glancing header.

United continued to exhibit strong passing in the midfield as well as some promising counter-attacks, however, delivering the final product one-man down proved challenging for the visitors.

In the 60th minute, Copenhagen unleashed another shot from outside the box which Onana coolly caught yet again.

Maguire sprinted back and threw himself in front of an Elyounoussi cross inside the box, saving his team from a dangerous attack.

Ultimately, the referee blew the whistle for offside.

In the 68th minute, the referee made his way to the touchline yet again to perform another VAR review.

This time, it was found that Copenhagen’s Lukas Lerager had handled the ball in the box, meaning that this time the penalty would be awarded to United.

Fernandes sauntered confidently up to the penalty spot and blasted the ball into the top left corner, putting United back into the lead.

On the 80-minute mark, Fernandes delayed taking a corner as angered Copenhagen fans threw objects onto the pitch.

While United did well to continue holding off the Copenhagen attack, they were unable to maintain their lead until the end as Leraged caught Dalot napping and hammered a volley into the back of the net to level the scoreline.

Four minutes from time, 17 year old substitute Roony Bardghji got on the end of a header to hit a left-footed half-volley past Onana to hand Copenhagen the lead for the first time in the match.

Just after five minutes of added time were shown on the board, United’s players circled the referee to draw his attention to a potential handball inside the box.

Upon review, the referee determined that the player’s arm was not stretched out far enough for a spot kick to be given.

Maguire then hit a thunderous shot past the keeper, only for the crossbar to deny him from scoring the equaliser. A foul had been given in any case.

In the dying seconds, Fernandes unleashed a shot from distance that was scooped up by the home team’s keeper.

Unfortunately, it was not to be for United, with a series of questionable referee calls and the struggles of playing with 10-men for most of the match leaving them unable to walk away with anything from this seven-goal thriller.

This loss sunk United to the bottom of Champions League Group A, putting more pressure on Ten Hag as he continues to struggle to turn his team’s season around.

Starting XI: Onana, Maguire, Fernandes, Rashford, Hojlund, Eriksen, Garnacho, Dalot, Wan-Bissaka, Evans, McTominay
Subs: Varane, Amrabat, Mount

Manchester United travelled to Denmark to take on FC Copenhagen in their fourth Champions League fixture in Group A.

United beat FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford and would have undoubtedly been keen on a similar result in order to advance to the next round of the competition.

Erik ten Hag started Andre Onana in goal with a defensive four of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Diogo Dalot ahead of the Cameroonian goalkeeper.

In midfielder, Ten Hag gave the nod to Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes.

Rasmus Hojlund led the line with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho on either wing. Here are three things we learned from Manchester United’s 4-3 loss against FC Copenhagen.

Give Hojlund goalscoring chances and he will score

United started the game in breathtaking fashion through Hojlund who scored two goals in the third and 28th minute respectively.

For the first, a brilliant pass from Wan-Bissaka to find McTominay set the Scotland international very well inside the Copenhagen box. McTominay produced a stunning cross to Hojlund who was arriving at the back post.

The striker made no mistake from close range.

For Hojlund’s second, Garnacho tried to plant the ball into the back of the net but his shot was saved by Kamil Grabara. Luckily for United Hojlund was at the right place to score from the spilled save to give United a two-goal lead.

The 20-year-old is the first ever player to score five goals in his first four Champions League games for the 20-time English champions.

Unfortunately for the Red Devils, a  seemingly ridiculous VAR intervention to send Rashford off led to events spiralling out of control to allow Copenhagen an avenue back into the game.

By the time both teams were heading down the tunnel, Jacob Neestrup’s men had restored parity.

Throughout the season, Hojlund’s teammates have been accused of not creating enough opportunities for him, especially in the Premier League where the Dane is yet to open his goalscoring account.

It’s clear that when presented with the chances during games, Hojlund certainly has the ability to score and make his mark. It’s up to the rest of the team to create for him.

United collapsed in the second half

During large parts of the second half while a man down, United seemed defensively sound and compact enough.

The Reds even took the lead momentarily after Fernandes dispatched a powerful shot from the penalty spot into the back of the net.

However, a big defensive mistake from Dalot allowed Lukas Lerager to draw Copenhagen level once more.

Dalot did not notice Lerager behind them and the rival star was all too happy to creep in and score.

Just four minutes later, United failed to deal with a cross inside the box. The ball found Roony Bardghji who expertly connected with it to give Onana no chance of saving the ball.

All of United’s good work was undone in a few minutes in which some players lost concentration and let the moment get to them.

United’s Champions League dream hanging by a thread

As a result of their defeat at Parken, United’s dreams of making it out of Group A and advancing to the next round of the competition are hanging by a thread.

At the moment. the 20-time English champions are in the bottom position in their group with just three points.

Galatasaray who were beaten by two goals at the Allianz Arena by Bayern Munich, are a point above United.

United are now facing an uphill battle to make it to the round of 16 and will need big performances against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich.

Manchester United lost to Copenhagen 4-3 at Parken tonight. Here are our player ratings for the game.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 5- Could have maybe got down sooner for Copenhagen’s first but that’s nitpicking. Penalty is always a lottery and he can’t be blamed for it. Couldn’t do much for any goal.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7- Giving United renewed thrust on the right side with improved attacking play. Smartly played in McTominay to slide it to Hojlund for United’s first.

Harry Maguire 5- Was having a good game before the red card to Rashford invited a wave of Copenhagen attacks. Looked rattled then.

Jonny Evans 6- Not much impact before hobbling off with what looked like a serious injury. Huge concern for Erik ten Hag.

Diogo Dalot 4- Lost his man for Copenhagen’s third goal in unforgivable fashion but was playing well on his wrong side at left-back before that.

Scott McTominay 7- Assisted Hojlund and United’s first goal with a great cut-back from the byline and generally kept possession well in midfield.

Christian Eriksen 6- Nothing notable, just kept the play ticking and didn’t get bypassed too often during transition in a huge improvement from earlier appearances.

Marcus Rashford 5- Was United’s main point of attack on the right before being cruelly sent off for what looked like basic shielding of the ball. He won’t be happy with himself but can’t be blamed for the decision of the referee.

Bruno Fernandes 7- Played really well as the connecting link of midfield and the attack. Kept his rushed balls forward to a minimum and scored with his penalty kick to give United the second-half lead.

Alejandro Garnacho 7- Rashford and Garnacho have cemented themselves as United’s first-choice pairing now after another fine performance by the Argentine. Looks to take on defenders and even when things don’t come off, shores up the attack.

Rasmus Hojlund 8- Had a dream start on his homecoming by scoring a goal within the first five minutes. He was in dreamland after getting a quick brace, proving that he will score goals if chances are created by his teammates. Didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

Substitutes:

Raphael Varane 3- Things looked frosty between Ten Hag and the Frenchman when he was called to action after Evans’ injury. Showed why he hasn’t been trusted to displace Maguire and Evans with a shaky performance. Cost United the game by radiating panic across the backline.

Manager Erik ten Hag 6- Not making successful adjustments could be the only critique of the manager here but sometimes there’s nothing you can do when everything that can go bad, goes bad.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has praised Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes for their massive contributions which helped the team get over the line against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

A late goal from Fernandes provided some relief for Erik ten Hag who has been under pressure.

In defence, United largely had Maguire to thank for the side’s solidity at the back that secured a third clean sheet in the Premier League this season.

Speaking to TNT Sport (via The Mirror) after the final whistle, Ferdinand hailed the two players.

He said, “The captain stood up. We needed a big performance, we needed a goal. Critical time against Burnley after the Champions League defeat, he stepped up. Today they needed somebody to step out of the shadows and get into the spotlight. That was him. He took responsibility. A fantastic strike.”

“He (Maguire) deserves special mention as well. Head injury in the first couple of seconds of the game, battled his way through. It’s not about performances, there wasn’t a good performance there today. But they got the three points and that’s the most important thing.”

Ferdinand also addressed Rasmus Hojlund’s situation. The goalscorer cut a very lonely and frustrated figure up front as he had little to no service to pounce on.

When he was taken off, Hojlund was visibly angry and was spotted moaning and shaking his head on the bench.

Ferdinand explained that Hojlund is right to be disappointed because his teammates are neither playing to his strengths nor supporting him in terms of fashioning clear-cut goalscoring opportunities.

The Dane is yet to score in England’s top flight, although he has managed three goals in the Champions League this term.

Ferdinand remarked on the 20-year-old United star, “I wish we’d had a bit more time with Erik ten Hag [to discuss Hojlund] because he’s invested in a player we’re not seeing the best of. His best attributes are not being seen because the team aren’t playing to his strengths.”

“He [Ten Hag] said in his press conferences we want to play a bit more direct with players like Hojlund and Rashford who can play on the counter. Too many times they get wide and the quality is nowhere near good enough.”

“Antony doesn’t want to cross it, his first instinct is to see what he can do for himself. Marcus is more of a striker who wants to get on the end of things and see if he can finish. When he’s making his movements the ball is being delayed and isn’t coming into the areas.”

The 44-year-old TV pundit noted that in one instance during the match, Hojlund had made a brilliant darting run in anticipation of a cross from Alejandro Garnacho, but the Argentine’s cross never came.

As per Ferdinand, Hojlund’s case is not assisted by the fact that he is still so young and as such, does not possess the fortitude to ruffle a few feathers and demand more from his teammates.
