Despite much fanfare, Sofyan Amrabat has had a mediocre start to life as a Manchester United player which has seen him drop down to the bench. Consequently, his spot in the team has been frequently taken by the much-maligned Scott McTominay.

It all started out so differently for the Moroccan World Cup hero. The midfield general was praised by United fans for his incredible patience to sign for the club despite the interest of many other teams including Premier League rivals Fulham. The player, who claimed to only have eyes for the Red Devils, finally got his dream move from Fiorentina on deadline day.

In fact, arch-rivals Liverpool were also rumoured to be close to securing the services of the World Cup semi-finalist, as a deal was said to be “only hours away”. However, once again Amrabat’s supposed desire for United kept the deal from happening. That is quite a way to endear yourself to Manchester United fans around the globe.

Anyone who was following the Red Devils’ transfer activity on social media during the dying embers of the window would have seen the name Amrabat trending everyday on X. Such a clamour for a player of the Moroccan’s stature is rare. You would have been excused for thinking United were chasing a world-class talent like Kylian Mbappe or Jude Bellingham.

Man United fans got their wish and the man from Morocco was brought in on an initial €10m loan fee with the possibility of a permanent deal for €25m. The excitement probably mainly stemmed from the trending video of Amrabat heroically chasing down Mbappe at the World Cup and producing a monstrous sliding tackle to not only cleanly win the ball, but also continue to drive his team down the pitch by majestically carrying the ball downfield.

Secondly, the shambolic midfield performances versus Wolves on the opening day of the season also led many to doubt the wisdom of an aging Casemiro being the only defensive midfield option at the club.

So, the Moroccan made his much awaited debut vs Burnley in September and had fans excitedly chattering after a “stunning” full debut vs Crystal Palace at home in a 3-0 Carabao Cup victory.

Sadly, and this seems a recurring theme this season, things have only gone downhill since. The man from Huizen has failed to make any real lasting impression on the team. In fact, he has also put in some brutally poor performances. He was hooked at half-time in the Manchester derby and seems a regular candidate for the referee’s notebook. The pace of both the league and Champions League seems too much for the former Fiorentina man at present. Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton claimed the player looked like “a fish out of water” in the team’s 1-0 defeat vs Crystal Palace.

The Peoples Person recently labelled the signing a 1 out 10 so far stating that the midfielder has looked “overawed” and is yet to “find his feet” at the top level.

This lack of impact can be seen in the 10 games he has played in all competitions for the Mancunian side, he has failed to score or register an assist. In fact, the long-range pile driver that rattled the bar against Sheffield United is the only real chance he has had. To be fair, goals and assists should not be the marker of a defensive midfielder. So, let’s delve deeper.

According to Transfermarkt the player has only played more than 45 mins five times in his 10 appearances for the club. Hardly a ringing endorsement from the manager. The team have also lost five games and conceded 16 goals with the Moroccan picking up 3 yellow cards. Not great.

In Amrabat’s defence, it has not been plain sailing for him. The prolonged nature of the transfer meant that the midfielder had not been training with Fiorentina all summer, so effectively had no real pre-season. Furthermore, an injury crisis at his new club saw him play his first few games as a left-back, which is far from his natural position.

Additionally, he has had a revolving door of defensive and midfield partners in a club which is doused in uncertainty. Would anyone really be successful is the question. Lastly, to compound matters, the World Cup star picked up an injury while on international duty, so he has probably not been able to play to his maximum potential.

So what could have gone wrong, has gone wrong. This is the story of the Red Devils’ season. No matter what way you look at it, you cannot sugarcoat it. Amrabat has struggled and doesn’t look good enough. If the season ended tomorrow, the manager would be mad to sanction a permanent move. Luckily for the Moroccan, the season doesn’t end tomorrow. We are only in November and there is ample time to turn it around. Casemiro’s long term injury has also provided him a chance to nail down a more regular starting role in the defensive midfield department. Over to you Sofyan.

A few months ago it would have been incredible to think that Erik ten Hag would be in a quandary about whether Raphael Varane is good enough to replace Jonny Evans in the heart of his Manchester United defence, but that is the situation facing him right now.

Evans picked up what looked like a hamstring injury against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday which will probably rule him out for several weeks.

Varane came on in his place with Harry Maguire moving to left centre back and the project was less than successful as United shipped four goals during the 85 minutes they played together.

With Lisandro Martinez a long-term absentee, the only other option for tomorrow’s Premier League home match against Luton Town is Victor Lindelof. If, as expected, he comes in at LCB, Ten Hag will have to choose between Maguire and Varane at RCB. On current form, the England man could get the nod.

Despite conceding all those goals, Andre Onana has done little wrong in goal lately and will continue.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been a bright spark at right back since his return from injury and should keep his place.

Diogo Dalot had been doing well at left back until a poor error where he switched off and allowed Lerager to go unchallenged to score Copenhagen’s equaliser. This may be enough for Ten Hag to recall Sergio Reguilon for the Luton game as he continues to wait for Luke Shaw’s return.

The fact that United scored three against the Danes could tell Ten Hag he has found the best formula from an attacking point of view, so we think he could stick to the same forward six.

One doubt could be whether the aging Christian Eriksen can play three 90 minute games in the space of 8 days, but with Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount both struggling to settle at United and Casemiro out until Christmas, there are few options.

Kobbie Mainoo could be included but it is unlikely he’ll start as he has not played for the first team since getting injured against Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly.

A McTominay – Eriksen – Fernandes midfield therefore almost picks itself, with the excellent Alejandro Garnacho continuing on the left and Marcus Rashford, who was sent off on Wednesday, returning on the right.

In a front three bursting with pace, Rasmus Hojlund will lead the line and will be hoping to get off the mark in the Premier League after netting a brace on Wednesday, making it 5 from 4 in the Champions League.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted XI for the 3pm Saturday kick-off:

A UEFA disciplinary board is set to convene in the coming weeks to make a decision regarding the extent of Marcus Rashford’s ban after he was given a red card during Manchester United’s defeat against FC Copenhagen.

United lost at Parken by four goals to three.

The Red Devils seemed to be comfortably in control after Rasmus Hojlund gave his side a commanding two-goal lead.

However, Rashford was given a dubious red card in the 42nd minute that turned the game on its head.

Copenhagen scored two goals before the interval to restore parity.

United momentarily took the lead in the second half when Bruno Fernandes converted his shot from the penalty spot, but Jacob Neestrup’s men once again scored twice in the space of five minutes to hand United a devastating loss.

After the final whistle, Hojlund spoke to the media and blamed Rashford’s sending-off for the Red Devils’ defeat.

According to The Telegraph’s James Ducker, there is a chance Rashford could miss United’s upcoming crucial Champions League fixtures against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich in Turkey and Old Trafford respectively.

The 20-time English champions almost certainly need to get a result in both games if they are to get out of their group and advance to the next round of the competition.

According to Ducker, “Ten Hag faces anxious wait to discover if Rashford could face two-match ban for red card.”

“Manchester United cannot appeal the red under UEFA rules.”

“UEFA disciplinary body will meet before Galatasaray game to determine whether it’s a one-match ban or whether it should be a two-game ban.”

United will face Galatasaray on November 29.

The 1958 – a Manchester United fan group that has regularly been at the forefront of organizing demonstrations against the Glazers – have announced protest plans against the club’s owners during the upcoming game against Luton Town.

United are set to host Luton at Old Trafford on Saturday, fresh off their Champions League defeat at the hands of FC Copenhagen.

Ahead of the clash, The 1958 have revealed that there will be a protest which will start at 2 pm, an hour before kick-off.

The show of defiance against the Glazers is set to begin at the north west quadrant towards the back of the Stretford End.

United fans remain unhappy about the Glazers remaining onboard as majority shareholders, even as Sir Jim Ratcliffe closes in on a partial 25% investment into the club.

Since the Glazers announced they would be seeking strategic alternatives including a full or partial sale of United, supporters have been steadfast in their resolve that only a situation in which the American family completely part ways with the Red Devils is acceptable.

Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani’s withdrawal left the door ajar for Sir Jim to swoop in, with his proposal of partial investment seen as the most attractive option by the Glazers.

It’s understood that the INEOS billionaire is set to be immediately granted full control of United’s sporting operations.

There are also clauses contained in his deal with the Glazers that will eventually allow the British businessman to take full control of United in the near future.

This has however done little to reassure supporters who are still unhappy that the Glazers remain in situ.

A spokesman for The 1958 told The Mirror, “We believe the last 12 months has proved beyond any doubt that the Glazers only care about one thing – cold hard cash.”

“They are not fit to be custodians of one of the world’s most iconic football institutions. But they cannot buy the love we hold for OUR club.”

“We call on supporters around the world to stand united with us, at Old Trafford on Saturday and also via our website.”

Manchester United Women have humiliated Everton in the Conti Cup, beating them 7-0 at Leigh Sports Village.

A hat-trick for Nikita Parris, who had returned to the starting lineup, and a first goal for Geyse helped United secure the points on a cold, wet night in Leigh.

Marc Skinner had promised some rotation before their opening game of the Conti Cup campaign and there were seven changes from the team that started the 2-2 draw against Brighton on Sunday.

United were pressing well as Everton tried to play out from the back. Rachel Williams pounced on a lose pass on the edge of the area and got her shot away but former United keeper Emily Ramsey recovered well to make the save.

However, you sensed something was coming and two quick goals for Manchester United put them in the driving seat.

The first came in the 28th minute, some good build up play, one-two touch football from Hinata and Riviere led to the latter floating in a lovely cross which found the head of the on-rushing Nikita Parris.

Just over a minute later and Riviere was there with the assist again, floating a cross in from the right and United’s top scorer so far this season, Rachel Williams, headed it past Ramsey.

Williams was having a brilliant season so far, averaging a goal every 27 minutes.

United were hungry for more in the second half as United’s front three pressed Everton’s back line.

Ramsey, with a sloppy pass, was almost caught out by Parris. Williams did manage to poach the ball from the Toffees on the second time of asking but blasted it over the bar.

There were more goals in this game though and United’s third came from tonight’s Captain Hayley Ladd following a corner.

Blundell played it short to Le Tissier who whipped it into the box, flicked it on to Ladd who was able to bring it down and smash it into the back of the net.

In an attempt to at least rescue some pride from this match, Everton made four changes in the 61st minute but it was too little, too late for the Merseyside team whose mood was as miserable as the Manchester weather.

Nikita Parris got her second of the night in the 68th minute as Naalsund nutmegged her defender and passed it along the ground towards Williams who stepped over it allowing Parris to take the shot and the back of the net bulged.

Tullis-Joyce who was making her United debut, had had a quiet night and wasn’t really called into action until the 75th minute when she got down low to stop a shot sneaking in to the bottom corner.

And though it showed a glimpse of what the Toffees could do, moments later Parris completed her hat-trick as she and Toone countered well. The keeper came out to United’s number seven, who squared it for Parris to tap into an open goal.

Everton had given up a long time ago and allowed Geyse to make it six and get her first goal in a competitive match for United.

She received the ball just past the halfway line and the visitors failed to close her down as she broke into the box and found the space to slot it into the far corner. The celebration looked to be one of relief for the Brazilian striker, who joined United in the summer.

United came again, with another substitute keen to get on the scoresheet as Leah Galton hammered it into the roof of the net. Geyse cut it back from the byeline and found Toone, whose shot was blocked. It came back to Galton who powered it home for United’s seventh.

It was a ruthless performance from United, who had been desperate to get back to winning ways and keep a clean sheet in their first Conti Cup group game.

Team: Tullis-Joyce, Riviere (Rabjohn 62), Blundell (Galton 62), Evans, Le Tissier, Ladd (Zelem 73), Hinata (Toone 72), Naalsund, Garcia, Parris, Williams (Geyse 73)

Manchester United’s potential next sporting director, Paul Mitchell was in attendance during Getafe’s win against Cadiz on Monday.

It has been widely indicated that as Sir Jim Ratcliffe closes in on a partial 25% investment into United, he has identified possible key personnel to spearhead his vision at Old Trafford, with Mitchell being among them.

The INEOS billionaire’s proposal is entirely contingent on being granted sporting control.

He is keen to oversee a change of structure and operations at United, with a view to restoring the club’s past glories and bringing back success on the pitch.

Alongside Mitchell, it’s understood that former Juventus CEO Jean-Claude Blanc is also under strong consideration for a top job at United, with Richard Arnold’s future not secure.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person suggested that Sir Jim could start work at United as soon as next week when an official announcement could be made.

The Daily Star reports that Mitchell was present as Mason Greenwood’s Getafe won by one goal to nil against Cadiz at Estadio Coliseum.

Greenwood came up with an assist for Borja Mayoral’s all-important goal that secured the victory and clinched all three points for Getafe.

The English forward now has three goals and two assists in nine appearances across all competitions for the Spanish outfit this season.

As per the Daily Star, Mitchell was spotted by cameras while Greenwood was in action for his loan side.

The Carrington academy graduate of course joined Getafe after it was announced he will likely not play for United again. He was arrested last year and subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive control. He denied all the allegations.

In February this year, the Crown Prosecution Service stated that all charges against Greenwood had been dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses from the case.

United then launched their own investigation into the matter and had provisionally planned for his return but when the club’s plot was leaked, the Red Devils were forced to perform a U-turn, prompting the player’s loan move to Getafe.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has indicated that his former side have plunged back into crisis mode after their devastating 4-3 defeat against FC Copenhagen.

United scored two goals in the opening 45 minutes courtesy of Rasmus Hojlund who grabbed a brace.

Erik ten Hag’s men looked to be comfortable and in control, until a Marcus Rashford red card turned the game on its head. Copenhagen quickly scored two goals to restore parity before the break.

United momentarily took the lead in the second half after Bruno Fernandes converted his penalty.

However, once more, Copenhagen scored twice – this time in the space of five minutes – to clinch the win and secure all three points at Parken.

Ferdinand spoke to TNT Sports (via Eurosport) after the final whistle and blamed United’s poor mentality and a lack of leaders in the team for the team’s collapse.

The six-time Premier League winner said, “Back again into crisis mode, I think that’s the way it is. It’s a rollercoaster at Man United now. There’s no consistency.”

“We were watching that game and I was screaming, 2-0 up, Rasmus Hojlund, I’m thinking, ‘Wow, we’ve found a hero’, and then all of a sudden the wheels just fall off. They capitulate and that just signals to me a lack of character at the moment, there’s not enough characters in there to pull a team through.”

“When they’re in a situation where there’s a bit of adversity or they’re under duress, they haven’t got enough leaders and characters in those moments to pull them through in those moments and that’s what you need.”

“It doesn’t come down to ability in those situations. Away, Copenhagen, I’ve been there, we got beat 1-0 when I was there, but this is far too often we’re seeing this happen.”

Ferdinand added that the United players need to dig deep to overturn their current predicament and get the team back to winning ways.

The 45-year-old however admitted that ultimately the buck stops with Ten Hag and it’s up to the Dutch coach to pick his underperforming stars up.

]]>

Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford have been named in the latest England squad by Gareth Southgate to take on Malta and North Macedonia in November’s UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers.

The two games are England’s last in their qualifying campaign.

The Three Lions secured their qualification for the competition after beating Italy in a 3-1 victory last month. Rashford scored a stunning goal in that clash at Wembley Stadium.

Since Southgate’s side have also secured top spot in Group C, the players will be looking to use their two remaining fixtures to prepare for the Euros and keep fit until club football returns after the upcoming international break.

Southgate spoke to the media and gave his reasons for selecting Rashford, who is currently undergoing a tough time at United.

The forward has only managed one goal across 15 appearances in all competitions this season.

He was the subject of a controversial red card decision during United’s most recent defeat against FC Copenhagen at Parken.

Courtesy of his sending-off in the first half, the Red Devils played a large part of the game a man down and could not manage to get a result vs. Jacob Neestrup’s men.

Southgate said about Rashford being called up, “I’ve not spoken to him. He knows we love him.”

“He’s been exceptional in his last three starts with us so we’re really happy with him. He enjoys his football with us so, for me, there’s nothing to discuss. What happens at his club is nothing to do with me.”

On whether Rashford deserved to be given his marching orders against Copenhagen, Southgate remarked, “He’s unlucky. I think it’s a red card, in the end the action takes him into a player. But everyone knows he’s trying to protect the ball and get his body across it. It’s just really unfortunate in that respect.”

The England boss expressed his pleasure at Maguire’s change in fortunes at Old Trafford.

At the moment, Maguire seems to be back in Erik ten Hag’s plans and even appears to be above Raphael Varane in the pecking order.

Southgate stated, “It’s great. I thought it might mean this was the first time I wouldn’t get a question about him! You want your players to be enjoying their club football and he’s battling for the team. I’m really pleased for him.”

Rasmus Højlund believes Erik ten Hag retains the full support of the Manchester United dressing room, despite the club’s poor start to the season.

Speaking in the aftermath of the borderline farcical defeat to FC Copenhagen, the Danish striker revealed: “I think everyone in the dressing room is behind him, so I think it’s only a matter of time (before things go our way).”

Though United ultimately lost last night, their defeat came largely at the incompetent hands of the officiating team, rather than anything the opposition did with their feet.

The opening twenty minutes of the match saw Ten Hag’s side take a two-goal lead, courtesy of two predatory finishes by Højlund.

United were in full control at this point with the Dane describing it as “some of the best football we have played this season.”

A series of bizarre VAR interventions then promptly turned the game on its head, with United losing a man, conceding a penalty and being subject to a series of further inexplicable decisions as they eventually ran out 4-3 losers.

A full report on the match can be found here, as well as a breakdown of the individual performances by the United team. Højlund’s efforts were sufficient enough for him to win The Peoples Person’s Man of the Match award.

The defeat left United bottom of their Champions League group, with qualification to the next round looking increasingly unlikely.

This would, in normal circumstances, be sufficient cause for an analysis of how a potential exit from a European competition at the hands of a Danish team may affect a manager’s position.

The decisions in the game were so overwhelmingly poor, however, that no inquest into Ten Hag’s tactics were launched. Indeed, even after his side were reduced to ten men and the Dutchman was able to recalibrate at the half-time interval, United were largely the better side in the second half, despite the numerical disadvantage.

Højlund was quick to praise his manager after the game, underscoring his quality as a coach and how much he has helped the Dane to develop in a short space of time.

“[Ten Hag] is a very good coach who thinks about the smallest details. He helps me a lot and gives me a lot of faith in things and supports me,” the Dane revealed.

Though it has been an undoubtedly disappointing start to the season for Ten Hag and his players, the fact that the Dutchman retains the support of the dressing room will be a key factor in the team turning things around.

A match against Luton at Old Trafford on Saturday appears the perfect place to start.

The post Manchester United linked with January move for Mehdi Taremi appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Manchester United have been linked with a January move for Porto striker, Mehdi Taremi, as the club tries to help lighten the burden on Rasmus Højlund.

Sport Witness relays a report by Italian outlet, Inter Live, who suggest United are set to rival Inter Milan for the Iranian international’s signature.

Inter are thought to be “looking for a new striker” with the experienced Porto star top of their list. Taremi had previously been linked with United in the summer, suggesting he’s a player Old Trafford officials have had on their radar for some time now.

With good reason.

Taremi scored twenty-two goals in Portugal last season, with a further five in seven Champions League games. The season prior, he scored twenty league goals. Across these two years Taremi also provided nineteen assists, indicating he’s a forward as capable of creating, as well as finishing, chances.

This season has seen a slight downturn in productivity, with the Iranian only returning three goals and three assists in fourteen games. This would still be more goals than all of United’s forwards (bar Højlund) combined, however.

And it’s the Danish striker who appears to be primary consideration of Old Trafford officials’ interest in Taremi.

Erik ten Hag is reported to want an “experienced centre-forward” in the January window, to help “lighten the load of responsibility” on his young striker.

Højlund has started virtually every game since his delayed introduction, working tirelessly in and out of possession.

Five goals in four Champions League games indicates his ruthlessness in front of goal, but he is yet to score domestically. The complete absence of creativity amongst his team-mates is the root cause of this drought, however.

When Højlund left the pitch last night against FC Copenhagen, the game proceeded to very quickly swing in the opposition’s favour. The Dane’s physicality offered a consistent outlet for his teammates, and he was constantly harassing the Copenhagen defenders.

Mason Mount, brought on in his stead, could not offer remotely the same threat, though it’s unfair to ask a diminutive attacking midfielder to lead the line for a team with ten men. The natural replacement for Højlund – Anthony Martial – continues to be an irrelevant member of the squad, with the club though to be open to his departure in January.

As such, the reported interest of United in Taremi makes sense. A figure of €10m is suggested as the fee required to secure the 31-year old’s services.

With Højlund being the lone bright spot in the United attacking unit this season, any efforts that can be made to help preserve his brightness should be made.
