Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has indicated that he has had to be extremely patient as he undergoes his recovery from a recurring injury issue.

Martinez picked up a fracture back in April during United’s home clash against Sevilla in the Europa League.

He returned just in time for the club’s pre-season tour but the injury was aggravated in September’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal.

The World Cup winner played through the pain barrier in subsequent games against Brighton and Bayern Munich before it became increasingly clear an intervention was the best option.

Martinez had to undergo surgery for the second time to fix his metatarsal injury.

In his absence, United have struggled defensively. Evidence of this was seen during the Red Devils’ most recent game against Newcastle at Old Trafford.

United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by the Magpies who capitalized on a string of high-profile mistakes at the back to inflict misery on Erik ten Hag’s men.

Courtesy of different injuries to other defenders, including Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sergio Reguilon, Ten Hag has not been able to field a consistent back four all term.

Martinez, who is currently in Argentina was present for a domestic match at his former club Defensa y Justicia on Wednesday.

He spoke to TNT Sports after the final whistle and was questioned about when he is likely to return to action.

The 25-year-old said, “I am in the process of recovery and happy to be here visiting the club.”

“It is the second time that an injury like this has happened to me. So, you have to be patient.”

A cursory glance through the Premier League table will show how Manchester United’s defence has crumbled this season as compared to their performances last season.

In manager Erik ten Hag’s first season, United conceded the second-lowest number of goals among all 20 teams while currently, they have conceded the second-most among the top-12 sides in the league.

Add to this the seven they have conceded in two games of the Champions League and it is clear to see that improvements at the back need to be made as soon as possible.

United’s worsening defensive situation

The situation has been exacerbated by the injury and subsequent surgery on Lisandro Martinez and the Argentine is expected to miss at least three months.

The only way the club can spend money is by selling players and Harry Maguire was one centre-back the club was intent on selling during the summer.

His move to West Ham United broke down after the club failed to agree a pay-off amount with their former skipper. That forced the Red Devils to miss out on the likes of Kim Min-jae, Benjamin Pavard and Jean-Clair Todibo.

Football Insider have claimed that United are continuing their attempts to move Maguire on as soon as possible.

If it occurs in January, a new centre-back might arrive as early as the winter window as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

“There is a clear goal for the club. The idea is to bring in an important centre-back either in January or the summer.

Martinez injury, Maguire future linked to United’s CB search

“The timing will likely depend on Lisandro Martinez’s recovery but the crucial point to understand is if and when Harry Maguire will leave, as that will also determine what the club does and when in terms of centre-backs.”

The World Cup winner’s absence and the poor injury record of Raphael Varane will no doubt trouble the manager. The club are building a defensive shortlist of targets.

The likes of Goncalo Inacio, Antonio Silva, Giorgio Scalvini, Edmond Tapsoba are few of the names linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Whether the Glazers will sanction a costly purchase in January remains to be seen. The club did not back Ten Hag in his first season and instead chose to strengthen via the loan market last time around.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has successfully undergone his surgery.

The Peoples Person covered a report which revealed that the defender was set to undergo an operation on a metatarsal fracture suffered last season.

The problem started when he picked up the injury during United’s Europa League game against Sevilla at Old Trafford.

It was after Martinez and his centre-back partner Raphael Varane came off that the Red Devils crumbled and allowed the Spanish giants to recover from two goals down very late into the game.

Martinez returned during pre-season.

However, it seems like the issue was aggravated as the World Cup winner didn’t really look like himself when the Premier League campaign started.

It was later revealed that he had been playing while not completely fit and required the assistance of painkillers to be able to get through matches.

During his presser ahead of the Galatasaray game on Tuesday, Ten Hag confirmed that Martinez was set to undergo surgery.

The Dutchman said, “I can confirm, yeah. Licha Martinez will undergo surgery and the team news is Antony can probably return.”

According to the reliable Gaston Edul, everything went successfully and the 25-year-old has started his recovery journey.

Martinez is expected to be sidelined for up to three months.

As per Edul, the United star is not expected to play for Argentina until the turn of the year.

At the moment, Ten Hag’s options at centre-back include Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire.

Martinez’s prolonged lay-off adds to the team’s problems already brought about by a decimated defensive department caused by absences as a result of injuries to the likes of Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sergio Reguilon.

Manchester United will look to bounce back when they take on Turkish giants Galatasaray on Tuesday in their second group game of the Champions League.

United have lost two on the bounce in the Premier League and opened their Champions League campaign with a 3-4 defeat away to Bayern Munich.

Manager Erik ten Hag is under pressure to deliver results and injuries have played a major role in the recent losses.

Lisandro Martinez is set to have yet another foot surgery which the manager confirmed while he added that Antony could be in the reckoning but he has had only one proper training session so far.

Antony back, Lisandro out

The Brazilian had been accused of domestic violence and the club had announced he would remain away from the first-team till investigations get over.

“I can confirm, yeah. Licha Martinez will undergo surgery and the team news is Antony can probably return. Antony co-operated fully and it came out, he’s not charged, so.

“Antony will be in consideration but yesterday was his first time back in team training. We have a final training, then we’ll make a decision.”

A lot of criticism has been aimed at Marcus Rashford and Casemiro, talismans in the previous campaign. But they have underperformed, which has negatively affected the team.

“You have to deal with. Experienced players know how to deal with it and it’s not the first time we’re in this situation because that’s a career, it’s not only highlights, it’s a journey and that will have bumps.

“Now it’s about the character, what you have to show and how to get out. There are many positives but things we need to improve on.”

The England winger, in particular, seems to allow his head to drop far too easily but Ten Hag insisted that the players are experienced enough and need to show character to bounce back.

“The facts are he’s not scoring at this moment, but he’s had opportunities, like against Brighton, where he had five or six occasions in a good spot.

Can Rashford hit top form again?

“If he works hard and invests every day, with the right focus and if the team around him supplies and helps him with movement, then it will come and Rashford is a player who’s capable of scoring a goal in every game. When he’s coming in the right spots, he will score.”

The Dutch manager was asked about United’s stuttering start and the fact that the club seems to take one step forward and subsequently, two steps back.

Ten Hag insisted progress was being made but injuries have meant there has been no consistency and mostly disappointing results.

“I think I don’t agree with that [lack of progress]. The team is moving forward, but we have to make adjustments as well.

“When you don’t have a left-back [fit], we have to change and we did. At the end of the day, it’s about results and we didn’t get the result we were looking for, which is very disappointing.”

Manchester United suffered their second consecutive home defeat in the Premier League, this time to Crystal Palace and this is United’s worst start since the current iteration of the league began.

The pressure on manager Erik ten Hag is being ramped up by the British media and injuries to so many players at the back and poor form is not helping matters.

The defence has seen almost all of the manager’s preferred choices suffer long-term injuries with the most recent news of yet another surgery for Lisandro Martinez quite a big blow for the Dutchman.

Lindelof is once again regressing this season

Last season, when both Martinez and Raphael Varane were injured, Victor Lindelof stepped up admirably but this season he is already showing why he has been the subject of criticism in the past.

While technically good, the Swede struggles with the physical aspect of defending and he was bullied off the ball by Eagles forward Jean-Philippe Mateta on Saturday.

The 29-year-old’s United deal ends in 2024 with the Red Devils having the option to trigger a one-year extension in a bid to protect his value.

There have been talks of extending his deal in the past but his most recent performances have been far from good and Ten Hag still is not fully convinced.

There have already been reports of the club eyeing another centre-back either in January or next summer and that could see United move on certain defenders.

The former Benfica star was the subject of plenty of interest last summer and now as per Fichajes, Juventus are eyeing a move for the United man.

“Juventus is targeting Swedish defender Victor Lindelöf, whose contract with Manchester United will come to an end in the summer of 2024. He appears to be contemplating his future in search of staying at the highest competitive level.

Juventus are looking at Lindelof

“Ten Hag has asked the Manchester United board to incorporate a new central defender in the coming markets, which could open the door for Lindelöf to leave the English club.

“Lindelöf’s arrival would significantly bolster the team’s defensive depth, providing a solid rotation alongside players such as Federico Gatti, Daniele Rugani, and Bremer.”

He had arrived for €35 million in 2017 under Jose Mourinho and his current market value stands at €18 million as per Transfermarkt.

Harry Maguire is expected to be moved on next and Lindelof still has a chance to cement his long-term stay at the club if he performs to his potential during this difficult period.

The bad news keeps coming for Manchester United after the shock home defeat to Crystal Palace.

The Daily Mail reports that defender Lisandro Martinez will undergo further surgery on his previously fractured metatarsal in his right foot.

The surgery is expected to take place on Monday and it is estimated that it will keep him out of action for a minimum of three months.

The Peoples Person reported that another surgery could be in the offing for him and now the same has been confirmed by The Daily Mail.

Martinez returned from a fractured metatarsal in the pre-season and had started well before coming off against Arsenal due to pain in the same foot.

He then proceeded to play the next two games by taking painkillers before further diagnosis revealed a flare-up of the same issue in the metatarsal.

Martinez didn’t look his usual combative self when he was playing through injury so the decision has been taken for him to bide his time, get the surgery done and cure the issue once and for all.

Manager Erik ten Hag struck a sombre tone when he addressed the issue in the buildup to the game against Palace.

“We did a proper diagnosis, in Argentina as well, but now it came out that there was a problem. That’s very sad, for him and the team, because he was not 100 per cent fit,” he said.

The surgery is expected to rule him out till January at the very least and adds to the headache of the manager.

United’s defence has been decimated by injuries, with only Diogo Dalot remaining as the specialist fullback in the squad at this time.

In the middle of defence, Raphael Varane is an injury concern whenever he is overworked, while Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, and Jonny Evans have glaring weaknesses which prevent them from being a go-to option for the manager.

United will be anxiously waiting for Martinez’s return and the news of a successful surgery will arguably be celebrated with much joy, such is the importance of the Argentinian to this United squad.

Manchester United are clearly struggling on the pitch, losing their second home game on the trot in the Premier League, with Crystal Palace the victors on Saturday.

The defence has been far from secure this season, with United losing five games out of nine and injuries at the back have not helped Erik ten Hag’s cause.

The Peoples Person reported on Friday that Lisandro Martinez will be out for an extended period after he suffered a recurrence of the foot injury that had curtailed his first season at the club.

Lisandro’s injury update

The injury happened in the game against Arsenal but the Argentine decided to keep playing, starting the games against Brighton and Hove Albion and Bayern Munich, and that may have caused the injury to be aggravated.

He subsequently missed the games against Burnley and the Eagles and now as per Sky Sports, the injury could require further surgery to fix the issue.

And as the case with surgery, the player could be sidelined for a longer period.

“Lisandro Martinez may need further surgery to finally get over his debilitating foot injury. United medical staff are still assessing how best for him to recover and discussing whether a second operation might be the best course of action.

“It means Martinez could be out until December, in the latest injury setback for the club,” Sky’s report stated.

Bad news for ETH and United

This will likely mean the World Cup winner will not be available for any of United’s Champions League group stage games and it could be a major problem for Ten Hag to solve.

Raphael Varane has returned from injury but the Frenchman remains quite injury-prone and the Dutch manager will need to carefully manage his minutes in a bid to avoid another casualty.

Victor Lindelof has looked shaky while Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans do not inspire much confidence despite their most recent outings.

It has already been reported that United are looking at making defensive additions next summer and it will be interesting to see whether they bring it forward to January. Ten Hag needs all the help he can get at this stage.

Argentina Under-20 manager, Javier Mascherano, is considering calling up United’s Argentinian contingent for the Olympics next year.

Participating countries are required to select a team of under-20 players but may include three overage players.

As Sport Witness reports that Mascherano has admitted that talks have begun with several Premier League clubs, with a view to securing the release of their players.

These include Man United and others like Brighton.

Although no specific names have been mentioned, Alejandro Garnacho is mostly likely one the former Liverpool man will have on his mind.

Lisandro Martinez too, though over the age of 20, may be in the consideration for one of the three overage spots.

The problem, from an Argentina point of view, is that unlike official Fifa competitions, clubs are only required to let their players under the age of 23 travel to participate in the Olympics.

This means when it comes to the Premier League contingent, a lot of negotiation will be required as clubs would be well within rights to block older players from leaving.

As reported, Mascherano has acknowledged this, saying:

“We know that the boys who have more continuity in their teams are going to be much more difficult because the pre-Olympic date is in full competition in Europe.”

As the report confirms, talks with Man United and other Premier League clubs such as Brighton have already begun, with Mascherano adding:

“It is not easy for the clubs to give an answer today, two or three months from now. There is still a long way to go, but we have started contacts and when the time comes, we will make the corresponding decisions. We hope to have those kids who have less continuity in their clubs.

From United’s perspective, Martinez may be one who Erik ten Hag would not want to lose, but the experience may be beneficial for Garnacho.

Uncovering the real reason behind United's worsening injury crisis - analysis https://thepeoplesperson.com/2023/09/29/uncovering-the-reason-why-manchester-united-are-faced-with-so-many-injuries-270231/ Fri, 29 Sep 2023 17:00:57 +0000 https://thepeoplesperson.com/?p=270231 If there’s one area where Manchester United appears to be struggling more…

The post Uncovering the reason why Manchester United are faced with so many injuries appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

If there’s one area where Manchester United appears to be struggling more than their major rivals, it’s their seemingly ever-extending injury crisis.

As listed by Premier Injuries, Man United have 10 players unavailable, the second-highest amount in the Premier League behind a struggling Chelsea side.

This morning, United’s injury woes got even worse.

The Peoples Person revealed that left-back Sergio Reguilon is the latest player to enter the treatment room, with a minor injury threatening to keep him out of action until after the international break in October.

With Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia both still on the sidelines, United are now without a natural left-back available for selection.

Key centre-back Lisandro Martinez is the day’s other injury casualty, and he could be out of action for up to three months after aggravating a foot injury that he suffered in April.

While United have been boosted by the recoveries of Raphael Varane, Mason Mount, and Sofyan Amrabat, all of whom impressed during United’s 3-0 drubbing of Crystal Palace in the League Cup on Wednesday night, this doesn’t compensate for the fact that further players seem to be continually being ruled out of action.

Still, the question remains – why are United constantly faced with an extensive list of injured players?

Because Erik ten Hag does a good job of keeping details on his players’ injuries under wraps, this proves to be a difficult question to answer.

When Scott McTominay was out for five weeks with an ankle injury, the Dutch manager withheld the real reason for his absence until after the midfielder returned to action.

He also kept the real nature of Varane’s and Mount’s recent injuries under wraps.

But while Ten Hag has done his best to remain secretive, other senior officials have made their feelings known on the matter.

According to several club officials, United players have been largely vulnerable to injuries due to the many fixtures that they have been required to play over the past few seasons.

United played 63 matches in all competitions last season; the most of any team in Europe’s top five leagues.

After remaining secretive for so long, Erik ten Hag finally let the cat out of the bag on his club’s injury crisis, admitting today that this sort of heavy workload is exactly the reason why his squad is struggling.

“Players can’t deal anymore with this overload and I think that’s what you see in this squad at the moment,” the United boss confirmed today in a press conference.

While United did well to add a multitude of new signings to their ranks during the summer transfer window, it will be vital for Ten Hag and his coaching staff to rotate and manage players meticulously, ensuring that they make the most of their now-greater squad depth and working toward preventing further unnecessary injury complications.

Manchester United are set to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday on the back of two consecutive victories but manager Erik ten Hag still has major injury problems to deal with.

It seemed like the injury cloud was clearing as Raphael Varane made a solid comeback while Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat all made it through without any repercussions against the Eagles in midweek.

But now, United have issued an official update on Lisandro Martinez stating that the centre-back is set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Lisandro suffers recurrence of last season’s injury

The Argentine had missed the games against Burnley and Palace and the official stance was that he was feeling discomfort on the part of the foot where he was injured last season.

The 25-year-old had to be stretchered off against Sevilla in the Europa League last season and missed the rest of the season.

He did come back for pre-season but seems to have suffered a recurrence of the injury in the clash against Arsenal.

The Argentina international managed to play on against Brighton and Bayern Munich and as noted by fans and pundits, he was not at his best and now it is clear why that was the case.

“Lisandro Martinez will be out of action for an extended period due to an aggravation of the foot injury he suffered in April.

“It has now been determined that he needs a period on the sidelines for recovery and rehabilitation. Assessment is ongoing to decide next steps,” the club announced.

The Athletic have now claimed that the injury is worse than previously thought and the World Cup winner could be out for as long as three months.

Three months out, can United cope?

“Lisandro Martinez will be out for an extended period due to an aggravation of foot injury he suffered in April. Martinez suffered the setback v Arsenal, played on v Brighton + Bayern, but needs rest.

“Could be same length of time as original absence (three months),” Laurie Whitwell tweeted.

This is very bad news for Ten Hag as he prefers the left-footed profile and with Luke Shaw also missing, either Victor Lindelof or Jonny Evans will have to fill in.

Even Raphael Varane is injury-prone so it will be quite a challenge to deal with a hectic schedule, especially with so much pressure being put on the team by the British media.
