Ajax manager Maurice Steijn has name-dropped struggling Manchester United star Donny van de Beek as someone who could help get his side out of their current predicament in terms of results.

At the moment, Ajax sit in 16th position in the Eredivisie, just two points above last-placed Utrecht.

It has been yet another challenging season for the Amsterdam giants, who have found it difficult to replicate their success after the exit of Erik ten Hag who joined United last summer.

Steijn spoke to reporters and suggested that one of the reasons for his side’s woes this campaign is that they lack enough quality and experienced players who are capable of making a difference when it really matters.

He said, “I look at the teenagers who can offer more than the players on the bench. Some senior players are not yet able to bring it in training and during substitute appearances.”

“I haven’t written them off. But I make different choices based on what I see in training and what I think the team needs.”

“Of course, this team would benefit incredibly from experienced players, such as Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek. Daley Blind and Dusan Tadic also excelled. We don’t have those guys, and that is a disadvantage for the team.”

Of all the players mentioned, Van de Beek seems to be the most attainable for Ajax considering his troubles at Old Trafford.

Since his £39m move in 2020, the Dutch midfielder has failed to nail down a regular starting berth at United or become an important squad member.

It was hoped that Ten Hag’s appointment could be the catalyst to finally get the 26-year-old out of this rut but unfortunately, that did not come to pass.

So far this campaign, Van de Beek has only managed two substitute appearances. He was not even registered in United’s official Champions League squad, such has been his decline.

The Red Devils tried to offload him during the summer transfer window. There was interest from Turkish clubs and Real Betis but nothing materialized.

Following Steijn’s admission, a return to Ajax could be the thing that hands Van de Beek the opportunity to revive his career.

The international break came at the perfect time for Manchester United with the team securing a last-gasp victory over Brentford to ease the pressure on the manager while also allowing the club to take stock of their injury situation.

Quite a few players are sidelined long-term while a few are nearing fitness but remain in need of match practice. There are other fringe players who also could do with some much-needed game time.

As has become the norm under Erik ten Hag, the club conducted yet another behind-closed-doors friendly, this time against League One opposition Barnsley.

Another behind-closed-doors friendly for United

The Peoples Person had reported yesterday about the friendly encounter and the fact that academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo will not be part of the contest.

Mainoo, who suffered an unfortunate injury during pre-season, had been training with the first team for some time now but it seems a return remains some way off.

Sergio Reguilon narrowly missed out on the chance to be part of the Brentford matchday squad and was scheduled to take part in the game.

As per The Manchester Evening News, Antony and Donny van de Beek started the game as they looked to build match fitness.

The Brazilian was missing for almost a month after allegations of domestic abuse emerged with United stating the winger would only return once investigations were over.

Donny, Antony start for United

He has since come back and made a couple of substitute appearances and the game was a perfect chance to build some match fitness as Ten Hag is desperate for a right winger.

As for Van de Beek, he was excluded from the Champions League squad and the club tried desperately to offload him in the summer but to no avail.

He has garnered a grand total of 21 minutes for United this season across two substitute appearances and he will be trying to prove his worth to his former Ajax coach.

The versatile midfielder did score a goal with United emerging comfortable 3-0 winners with the team having plenty of U21 players, just as Barnsley.

Whether the goal does anything for his prospects this season remains to be seen. There is also a lack of clarity about whether any other first-team star took part in the contest.

Manchester United’s struggle to move first-team players on during the summer transfer window was a major reason behind manager Erik ten Hag not getting more players.

The likes of Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, and Eric Bailly were all for sale with the Ivory Coast international eventually leaving on a free.

The Dutch midfielder has endured a nightmarish spell since his arrival at Old Trafford and his fortunes did not improve even with the arrival of his former Ajax coach.

Donny’s struggles at United

Such has been Van de Beek’s fall from grace that he was excluded from United’s Champions League squad and he is unlikely to see many minutes between now and January.

The 26-year-old was linked with moves to Galatasaray and Fenerbahce while the likes of Anderlecht and Lorient turned down the chance to sign the midfielder.

United were so desperate to offload the Netherlands international that they were even looking at straight loan exits with even Qatar being a possible destination.

This was not what Van de Beek had in mind when he arrived in Manchester from Ajax, after a fabulous season both on a personal and club level.

The Peoples Person had reported earlier in the summer that Ajax were thinking about coming in for their former star but it did not materialise.

And now AD (via Sport Witness) have claimed that former football director Sven Mislintat was not in favour of re-signing the versatile midfielder while manager Maurice Steijn was open to the idea.

Disagreements at Ajax over Donny

“The fact that he wanted Donny van de Beek and Nicolas Tagliafico will probably go down well with the supporters with their whining about the Ajax DNA, which no one knows exactly.

“But you can still ask yourself whether Ajax would be helped if those boys were to return. Van de Beek has rarely played in recent years.”

Ajax have started the new season in poor fashion and based on his displays for United, the 26-year-old would not have managed to make too much of a difference for the Dutch giants.

Whether a return to Ajax can reinvigorate the faltering career of Van de Beek remains to be seen. At this stage, United are willing to sanction his exit to any club that are prepared to pay the highest.

Manchester United’s midfielder, Donny van de Beek, has recently been linked with a move to Spanish side Villarreal.

The 26-year-old, who has a contract with the Red Devils until 2025, has seen limited game time at Old Trafford, sparking rumours of a potential departure.

According to Fichajes, Villarreal is keen on bolstering its squad for the 2024 season and views Van de Beek as a prime candidate to enhance its midfield.

The Yellow Submarine aims to climb higher in La Liga standings and believes that the Dutch international could be a pivotal piece in their quest for success.

Since his arrival at Man United, Van de Beek has struggled to cement a regular spot in the starting eleven.

Despite showcasing his talent and versatility in various midfield roles, the competition for places in the United midfield has been fierce.

This has led to speculations that the club might be open to offers for the midfielder, especially if it means he can secure regular first-team football elsewhere.

His lack of physicality pushes him way down the pecking order for Erik ten Hag.

The United boss is implementing an aggressive pressing style which demands its players to be athletic and agile.

Villarreal’s interest in Van de Beek is understandable. The Dutchman’s vision, passing range, and ability to break lines can be a significant asset for any top European side.

Just when you thought transfer rumours silly season was over, a late entry came from Turkey today, where the window is just about to close.

This came in the form of a report from Takvim via Sport Witness, who claimed that Fenerbahçe wanted to exploit their “good relationship” with Manchester United to land a deadline day deal for midfielder, Scott McTominay.

Sport Witness explain that “the Turkish side are desperate to add a number six to their squad before the end of the Turkish transfer window, which closes this evening.

“Fenerbahce want to loan [McTominay] until the end of the season, valuing the fact he can play as both a defensive midfielder and a central midfielder.

“He would be an ideal reinforcement and the two clubs are ‘in talks’ about a potential deal before the window slams shut this evening.”

As could be predicted, unless there is a colossal surprise, the move has not taken place, with it making little sense for United to loan the player and leave themselves short of options in midfield.

It would also seem unlikely to think that McTominay himself would be interested in such a deal.

Perhaps more significantly, the closure of the Turkish window means another exit route from United has closed for Donny van de Beek, who was expected to leave this summer.

The Dutchman has already turned down an offer from Turkish clubs but there were still rumours circulating that both Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray might be making a late run for him despite it being too late to register him to play in the Champions League.

That, too, looks now to not be happening.

There may still be chances for Van de Beek to resurrect his United career, although it seems unlikely given the fact that he has not even been registered to play in their own Champions League squad.

Eric Bailly did complete a move to Turkey this summer, joining Besiktas, for whom he got injured on his debut.

While Manchester United managed to get Erik ten Hag six new players, the fact remains that they could have done more especially considering the fact that two were loan signings.

In two seasons, the manager has had to work with six loan signings and the official stance from the club was that after the signings of Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund, the transfer kitty was exhausted.

The only way to further strengthen was by selling players but in that aspect, the club struggled massively on that front and had to settle for selling academy graduates instead.

Donny needs to leave for his own sake

Fred was the only high-profile first-team departure while the likes of Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, and Donny van de Beek still remain at the club.

The Dutch midfielder’s case is different from the other two as he was omitted from the Champions League squad list and there is very little chance of him getting game time between now and January.

He was named in the Premier League squad on Wednesday but if and when all the midfielders are fit and available, there is very little chance that he will get a game this season.

He was close to a move to loan move to Real Sociedad but injury concerns and ultimately disagreements over the wage split meant the move fell through.

Quite a few other clubs also tried towards the end of the window, including Lorient, but the midfielder was said to be waiting for bigger clubs to come after him.

This haughty attitude was criticised by the Ligue 1 side and ultimately nothing worked out on Deadline Day. News is still trickling in regarding clubs who pulled out of a move for the 26-year-old.

Anderlecht rejected Donny

As per LDH, Van de Beek’s agents had approached Anderlecht regarding a move but the Belgian giants had strengthened considerably in midfield and did not require the services of the Dutch international.

Anderlecht had already signed the likes of Mats Rits, Thomas Delaney, and Belgian international Thorgan Hazard and there was no need to go after the United reject.

However, United remain desperate to offload the former Ajax star and are even considering straight loan proposals instead of loan deals with an obligation or option to buy.

Turkish sides Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are said to be still in the race while United are even considering Qatari clubs as their window is open till September 18.

The summer transfer window was another example of how poor Manchester United are when it comes to moving players on who are on big wages.

Manager Erik ten Hag wanted quite a few gone so as to utilise the raised capital to try and reinforce further, especially in defence and upfront.

However, the only established first-team star to leave was Fred while the likes of Harry Maguire, Donny van de Beek, and Scott McTominay all ended up staying.

Donny needs to leave

While the manager still has use for the English defender and the Scotsman, there seems to be no way back for the former Ajax star.

He has endured a nightmarish few years since he arrived in Manchester and his fortunes did not even change under his former Ajax coach.

Van de Beek was linked with clubs all across Europe with Real Sociedad coming really close to a deal only for it to fall through in the end.

The likes of Lorient also tried but the player was said to be waiting for bigger clubs to come in, something which did not exactly pan out.

Turkish sides Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have been trying for the 26-year-old but the chance to play in Europe has gone. However, the door remains open, at least till September 15.

United were said to be so desperate that they were even willing to sanction a loan deal for the versatile midfielder who was not named in United’s Champions League squad.

While he did find a place in United’s Premier League squad, there is a pretty good chance he might not see too much game time between now and January.

Inter Milan are said to be willing to come back for him in winter but United are reportedly looking at more exotic destinations in a bid to offload the Dutch international as quickly as possible.

Turkey or Qatar remain an option for Donny

“The 26-year-old ended up remaining at Old Trafford beyond the deadline earlier this month but 90min understands there is still an active desire to find a new home for Van de Beek and United are looking for suitors in countries where the window is still open.

“The Turkish transfer window remains open until 15 September and clubs in Qatar have until 18 September to make signings, and these are two countries of particular interest to United as they seek to trim their squad.

“Interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce has not progressed but there is understood to be other clubs exploring a potential move for Van de Beek.”

Whether Van de Beek agrees to join a team in Qatar remains to be seen but an exit looks to be the only logical solution. Playing somewhere is still better than not getting any minutes in Manchester.

Fabrizio Romano believes there is a “very good chance” Donny van de Beek will remain at Old Trafford until January at least, amid continued reports linking the Dutch midfielder to Turkey.

The transfer guru reveals Van de Beek is unwilling to go on loan for the sake of it, instead preferring to wait for a move that makes the most sense for the next stage of his career.

Champions League football is thought to be a priority for the Dutchman when considering potential deals.

Unfortunately, clubs across Europe have already submitted their official squads for the upcoming tournament as per UEFA regulations.

This means even if Van de Beek was to join one of the Turkish clubs in the Champions League – for example, Galatasaray, who share a group with United – he will not be registered to play in the competition.

Romano believes the midfielder was never particularly keen on a move to Turkey regardless.

Van de Beek has been linked to a host of teams this summer but Romano reveals it was Real Sociedad who came closest to securing his services.

A loan move to the La Liga side was “really really close” but ultimately collapsed because United were unable to reach an agreement over the fee and the salaray coverage involved in the deal.

Van de Beek was “keen” on the switch, having agreed personal terms with Real Sociedad.

The prospect of playing in La Liga; in the Champions League; and in a team with obvious needs in central midfield were thought to be particularly alluring to the Dutchman.

Real Sociedad were unable to cover his wages at Old Trafford, however, and the deal failed.

Romano asserts it’s extremely likely Van de Beek will remain at Old Trafford as a result, as he is unconvinced by projects elsewhere after being so close to a move to the Spanish side.

This extended stay in Manchester will only last until January, however, with Romano believing the Dutch midfielder will leave once the transfer window reopens.

After a lot of huffing and puffing, Manchester United did manage to bring in a total of six players through the doors during the summer transfer window, but where they really struggled was in offloading their overpaid stars.

Manager Erik ten Hag ended up selling quite a few academy graduates while Fred was the only high-profile first-team star to leave in the summer.

The likes of Eric Bailly, Donny van de Beek, and Harry Maguire proved most difficult to move on with the Ivorian only departing after the English window closed.

The England international is expected to stay put at least till the next window while United are desperately trying to move the Dutch midfielder on.

Donny needs to be moved on

He was linked with quite a few clubs close to deadline day but he stayed put, hoping for bigger clubs to come after him. Most clubs tended to stay away.

Turkish clubs Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are said to be still in the race with Gala’s initial loan bid rejected by the club. United are even willing to sanction a loan deal with an option to buy at this stage.

If Van de Beek does not secure a move to Turkey, he might be forced to extend his stay in Manchester for a couple of more months but his fortunes are unlikely to change.

Even under Ten Hag, his former Ajax coach, the 26-year-old midfielder managed only four starts in all competitions last season, producing anonymous displays each time.

He is yet to even make the matchday squad in the new campaign and a January move could be the next best solution for both parties.

According to Fichajes, Serie A side Inter Milan are eyeing a move for the versatile midfielder in a bid to strengthen in the centre of the park.

The Milan giants are willing to pay as much as €20 million for the player who cost the Red Devils €39 million three years ago.

Inter Milan eyeing January move for Donny

“Donny van de Beek, a signing who has not met expectations at Manchester United, could be on his way to Serie A, and more specifically to Inter Milan during the next winter market

“Under the direction of Italian coach Simone Inzaghi, he thinks he can find a more than interesting option to try to recover the best version of himself.

“The Dutch midfielder has become a target for Inter Milan, who would be willing to pay around 20 million euros for his services.”

Inter were linked with a summer move as well but the price associated with the move as mentioned in the report might be on the higher side considering his current market value of €13 million as per Transfermarkt.

While Manchester United managed to get six players through the doors during the summer transfer window, the club’s real problem was offloading their overpaid stars.

Most players to depart were academy graduates while Fred was the most high-profile first-team sale in the summer.

United failed to sell Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Donny van de Beek despite their best efforts with the Ivorian leaving post the end of the window on a free to Besiktas.

While Maguire is staying put, the Red Devils are desperate to move on the Dutch midfielder, who has endured a torrid time since his £40 million move to Manchester.

United want to move on Donny

His fortunes did not improve under his former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag and his injury ensured that his future lies away from Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old had chances to depart in the summer with the likes of Lorient interested in acquiring his services but he dug his heels in, hoping a big team would come in for him.

Unfortunately, that window passed and now the only legitimate option would be to try and agree a deal with one of two Turkish sides linked with a move.

Galatasaray were trying to sign the versatile star but their loan fee amount was promptly rejected by United on deadline day but talks were said to be continuing.

Recently, The Peoples Person spoke about Fenerbahce’s wish to hijack the deal while Royal Antwerp were said to be surprise suitors.

The chance to play in Europe at least till January is gone with team sheets already confirmed and the road to Saudi Arabia is also closed.

GivemeSport have suggested that while United would prefer a permanent deal, they are currently open to all sorts of exit options including a loan deal with an option to buy.

United need to be flexible in their attempts to sell Donny

“The club’s preference would be to offload van de Beek, but it hasn’t been routine. The main interest has come from Turkey and there have been some enquiries from Saudi Arabia, but it’s a race against the clock.

“Manchester United might be stuck with van de Beek unless they can find a quick and late solution. I think that they may have to surrender on price and, also, they may have to decide to accept a loan with an option or an obligation in order to make something work.

“There is still a possibility that we will get some late movement with van de Beek, but he’s not been the easiest player for Manchester United to find a solution for,” journalist Ben Jacobs wrote.

It would be wise to move him on, even if the club end up taking a financial hit since he is not a part of the manager’s plans and also because he is on a £120,000-per-week deal.
